Since 1948, Israel has denied Palestinians their fundamental rights, refusing to comply with international law. It maintains a regime of settler colonialism, apartheid and occupation over the Palestinian people. This is only possible because of international support. Governments fail to hold Israel to account, while corporations and institutions across the world help Israel to oppress Palestinians.

Because those in power refuse to act to stop this injustice, Palestinian civil society has called for a global citizens’ response of solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and equality.

Samah Sabawi is originally from Gaza and now lives in Australia. Her new book, Cactus Pear for my Beloved, is a memoir of her family over the past 100 years. It has been described as “a magic lantern and an elegant mosaic and a reclaiming and a reassertion of memory and history”.

The book was born out of Samah’s PhD research into memory in the context of generational trauma and exile. She last visited Gaza in July 2023, and much of the landscape described in the book has now been turned to scorched earth.

Yet, her book is a story of optimism, and belief in the strength of art, family and community.

The event is organised by Sumud – The Finnish Palestine Network. The discussion will be held in English.

What: Women’s Day March

What time: Gathering at 1 PM, march starting at 2 PM
Where: Senaatintori, 00170 Helsinki

On International Women’s Day, we march for equality and human rights to show the strength that wants Finland to move forward in its work for equality – not backward. The program at Senate Square starts at 1 PM, and the march departs at 2 PM. Senate Square is located in front of Helsinki Cathedral.

The route goes from Aleksanterinkatu via Mannerheimintie to Kansalaistori. The march is approximately 1.3 km long. It is also possible to join the march along the route. The march route is accessible, and the streets are heated. However, some parts of the path may have cobblestones and paving stones.
